Wind turbine farms are becoming more popular and for good reason. With the conservation of energy creeping into the minds of many, a lot of money can be saved with the application of a wind turbine on your property. It is even possible to produce enough electricity to not only supply your home but to sell any additional power back to your utility company. It is said that with ideal conditions a wind turbine can achieve upwards of 80% savings on a single family’s electric bill. With these savings, in areas such as northeast USA, using a wind turbine it is not uncommon to achieve an electric bill in the cooler months of merely $8 to $12. Doesn’t that sound splendid?

The initial question though is always, how much will it cost? Commercial-scale wind turbines installed and complete with a tower will run you right around $3½ million, give or take a few hundred thousand. Remember though, commercial-scale wind turbines are massive and generate 2Megawatts of energy, which is 2 million watts, a tremendous amount of power. The average home can run exclusively from a 10KW wind turbine and the cost is generally figured at around $3000 to $5500 per kilowatt. Even that though is a rough figure; ultimately it depends upon the manufacturer and cost of installation as well as the tower. What if though, you could build your own wind turbine?

Learning how to build your own wind turbine is fun and easier then you may think. To build your own wind turbine you will need to get your hands on the essential components and have an at least basic workshop area to assemble and fabricate the pieces. The parts you will need are actually quite easy to get a hold of once you know where to look and what to look for. Additionally, you need to have a general knowledge of measuring and skill in the construction of various components. For example, the mounting of the blades requires a balanced hub, which will not only allow secure mounting of the blades but also mounting to the main shaft of the generator.

First off, tackle the generator; eBay is a great place to find them. What you need is a generator that produces DC current at low RPMs. The biggest mistake you can make when attempting to produce your own wind turbine is ignoring the importance of a low RPM motor. The goal for your generator is one, which will produce at least 30 volts output at around 300-350 RPMs, this is important because at low wind speeds you will still be producing 12 volts.

Once you have a decent DC generator, its time to design the blades. A great option for this is to purchase a length of PVC pipe and split it into 3 pieces lengthwise that are around 24” each, giving you an approximate 4-foot span. Taper the pieces to be curved and thinnest at the edge furthest from the mounting point. Next, design or purchase an electric flow controller. Best practice would be to research the terms “electric flow controller system” to grasp a basic understanding of what you need to direct the flow of electricity into your power grid. Now that you have the basic setup for the turbine itself, you will need to fabricate a balanced mounting point for the blades, which also mounts to the shaft of the generator. Once the blades are mounted you need to design a base, a length of 2×4 wood will do, to mount the generator to. The base will need a tail fin at the opposite end to allow the wind to direct the turbine. Once the turbine itself is assembled a freely spinning base must be constructed to allow the turbine to swivel with the changing direction of the wind.

Now that you have the turbine assembled completely, all you need to do is set it atop a tall tower and connect it to the electric flow controller, which generally connects to a series of 12-volt batteries. Sounds simple right? Well, perhaps this venture would be best completed with a step-by-step guide that goes into much more detail. Either way, once your wind turbine is assembled and able to capture the wind you will immediately begin reaping the benefits of the saving on your energy bill.

Wind energy is all around us everyday. Energy conservation is on the minds of many people these days, and for good reason. A wind turbine is defined as: A device for converting wind power into electricity. Sounds simple enough right? Well it is, provided your property receives a fair share of wind each day.

The process is pretty straightforward. Wind energy travels across propeller like blades which turns a rotor connected to the main shaft, the main shaft is connected to a generator which, when spun, generates electricity. The turbine itself typically sits atop a tall tower for best results. The idea is to get the turbine up and into non-turbulent wind whenever possible. Wind becomes more turbulent the more it travels in and around trees, hills, houses, or any objects that get in the way. The general rule is to place the turbine atop a tower that is 30 feet above anything within 500 feet. Not to say you cannot still use a wind turbine if your house has trees around it or even if you feel it is not very windy, remember the higher you get, the windier it gets. Usually, an 80′ to 120′ tower is supplied when you purchase a wind turbine.

The towers typically used are guyed lattice towers or freestanding towers, a guyed lattice tower uses down guy cables to anchor the tower which are attached to three points near the top and keep the tower steady. There are two types of guyed lattice towers commonly used. Guyed Lattice Towers and Tilt-up Towers.

A guyed lattice tower you have probably seen before, being used as a broadcasting antenna, or a cell tower so their size varies substantially dependent upon the application. They consist of three legs which slightly taper in from bottom to top and are made stronger with cross braces evenly spaced joining the three sides together. The reason they are called “guyed” lattice towers are due to the three down guy cables that attach to them from the top to the ground. If you have a 120′ tower the spacing for the down guy cables should be 90′ from the base, which requires a great deal of space. These towers are most commonly used due to them being the least expensive and requiring the least amount of concrete but still being able to reach far into the sky.

The second type of guyed lattice tower, the tilt-up tower is typically made of tubing and has four sets of down guy cables so they can be tilted down to the ground when servicing of the wind turbine is needed. These towers also require the most space to install due to the four ground points. Although they are a little more expensive then the guyed lattice tower they do provide an advantage to you in the fact that you do not have to climb them for servicing.

Freestanding towers are the most expensive but are the ideal option when space is limited on a property, they also require more concrete to be used in anchoring. These towers also commonly come in two types. Monopoles are the ones we all have seen standing on the big wind farms with a tapered tube from the ground to the top and are the best looking tower. These towers require the least amount of ground space, they also though, require the most steel and concrete to keep them stable and able to withstand the force of the wind.

The second type of freestanding tower is the freestanding lattice tower, a good example of these is the huge electrical towers that power lines are hung on across great spans carrying power to various points in the countryside. Although these are less expensive then the monopole towers and take up a little more space, they still require less space then guyed lattice towers. However, substantial amounts of concrete and steel must be used to ensure their stability.

With wind turbines for the home there are many options when it comes to towers, and essentially the decision you must make will be greatly influenced between these types by your budget and the amount of space you have as well as the height you need to achieve for maximum efficiency. Nonetheless, the decision to purchase a wind turbine is a good one and can conserve enough energy to pay for themselves within a year or two in typical applications.

Technology has changed the entire scenario and today, man is enjoying the fruits of technology in many ways. In olden times, it was not possible for a person to understand the benefits of various natural elements. However, with the passage of time, things have changed and in fact, they have taken a turn for the best. Today, one can enjoy the benefits of technology and can make use of many natural resources. One of the best examples of recycling and usage of natural resources is “solar energy”. Solar energy plays a crucial role in many ways.

Homemade solar panels are a new trend these days. The majority of people all over the world prefer homemade solar panels since these panels save a lot of electricity. If you ponder over this seriously, then you would understand that the prices of electricity is increasing like everything else and during this time of recession, it is really very important for us to save some money and be on budget. Many people today save money in order to get good alternatives and therefore, saving natural resources also is something very important. When you save electricity, you save a lot of energy. Solar energy is one of the best ways to save a lot of energy in today’s modern world where pollution is at it’s peak.

A Solar panel converts solar energy into electricity. It is very simple to build solar panels at home. You can make your solar panels easily with very simple items. Below are various steps:

Clean the copper flashing plate thoroughly. Use sandpaper to remove any corrosion from it. Now cut it to the size of your electric burner.

Now turn the burner on with the copper flashing on it. Heat it for as long as 30 mins until a layer of thick black cupric oxide is formed.

Now let it cool until the cupric oxide layer begins to peel.

Now try to scrub the copper flashing plate gently and thoroughly under running water to remove any traces of the oxide. But you must make sure that the red cuprous oxide is not scrubbed off.

Now cut another piece of copper flashing in the same size. Cut the tops of a 2 liter wide mouthed plastic bottle or glass jar. Use the alligator clips to attach the two panels and place them inside the jar or the bottle in such a way that they fit along the curves and do not touch each other.

Connect the cuprous oxide plate to the negative terminal and the copper plate to the positive terminal of the meter.

Fill the bottle with a solution of water and salt leaving the clips dry and high.

Now place this solar panel in the sun and see the results.

Thus building solar panels at home is not only easy but also very quick and safe. When you build your own solar panel at your home, you will understand that this is one of the best ways to save a lot of energy and money.

Home wind turbines are a good substitute to the regular source of energy for your household. Unlike the large wind turbines which are seen at large farms, the home wind turbines are smaller in size. They are ideal for homes which are located in a windy location. With the use of the kinetic energy these small wind turbines can generate power and reduce the carbon footprint cutting down electricity bills to a great extent.

Installing a home wind turbine can cost you a little, but it is going to be a one time investment which will pay off in the long run. If you want a low cost home wind turbine then go for a 3 blade low wind model which is maintenance free. They are generally good for all wind speeds.

If you want a wind turbine which is more efficient then go for a model with more blades, like 5 and which works well even in low speed winds. Some of the models available in the market are maintenance free and offered at a reasonable price. To be able to save and preserve the unused energy generated from these turbines, you may have to install batteries.

Using one or two home wind turbines can contribute a little in cutting down on your electricity bills to some extent. But if you want to increase its efficiency and cut down the electricity cost more, then combine this technique with other appliances which use natural energy. For instance, a home wind turbine can be coupled with solar panels, the combined effect of which will be more satisfactory for your household.

If you want to rely on home wind turbines to a larger extent, so that all of your household electricity needs are fulfilled by them, then you must equip your rooftop with multiple wind turbines. Especially homes which are at a high elevation and at open spaces, can make use of such home wind turbines very effectively. Cutting off from the grid, from the regular source of electricity supply can be a bit difficult, hence keeping it as a back up option would be smart. You can still have the wind energy generated from your home wind turbines as the primary source of electricity.

Before buying any home wind turbine, compare the prices offered by various companies or brands, check the features that come with it and see how much the installation charges vary with each one. Also, do not forget to check the warranty and guarantee if offered. It is always better to go for those wind turbines which come with warranties and offer guarantees as well. So that in case of any manufacturing defect or problem in its operation, immediate and free service can be available to you from the manufacturers.

So, before you actually buy one for your home, buy it only if your home is located in a windy location and in open spaces. Even though these turbines can turn out to be very noisy because of the rotation of blades, it is worth it as it not only helps in reducing the electricity bills but also helps reduce global warming.

We need electricity for our homes and to heat our water. We all take this for granted and we would be in a dangerous situation if we lost it. If there are glitches in the system we want them to be removed at all costs. One efficient method, which is very useful these days to try to solve these problems of producing electricity, is solar energy or home solar panels.

Some people in the heating of homes, providing water and power electricity to their homes as well as businesses, utilize the heat generated by the sun. The solar energy that comes from the sun reaches the earth’s surface and radiates back. This solar energy can be harnessed for various purposes in homes. Using special boxes, the solar energy can be redirected and concentrated. The light during the day is attracted by these solar panels and by utilizing it; people can heat water and homes throughout the night.

There are different sizes and shapes in which home solar panels come. But the main purpose of the solar panel is to convert the solar energy from the sun into electrical energy. The process by which light is converted into electricity is called photovoltaic. A very thin film, which is made of silver, is present in photovoltaic cells and these cells are self-generating as well. This film is placed on a semiconductor layer and this layer is found on an iron substrate. Photovoltaic cells are considered an important and efficient medium to convert light into electrical energy which can be used to heat water, power electricity and heat homes.

Home solar panels come in different shapes, which include rectangular, square and round shape. One can see these solar panels not only in homes but also at the top of buildings and also in open fields. Solar panels are a very efficient method of harnessing solar energy.

There are several individual solar cells present in home solar panels. The functions of these solar cells are similar to large semiconductors, which utilize large-area p-n junction diodes. When home solar panels are exposed to sunlight then the p-n junction diodes convert the sun’s energy into usable electrical energy. The electrons are knocked out of their orbits and released when photons strike the surface of the solar panels. The electric fields present in the solar cells cause the electrons to flow in a certain direction. The quality of the home solar panel will be higher if more solar cells are used during its construction.

The benefit of using home solar panels is that the solar energy is not affected by supply or demand. The electricity is generated free of cost. Home solar panels do not pollute the atmosphere because solar energy is natural and pure. It may also be helpful in providing better health.

For many people, use of solar power in the home is becoming a very attractive option. Solar power can be used not only for heating the home but it can be useful for running different appliances. Many people consider solar energy to be an eco-friendly and cheaper method of bringing power into the house.

Solar power can be utilized in homes in a number of ways. Some people in California use solar power. The power consumption has been reduced by 50 to 70% in these zero energy homes. Solar power can be used to heat the home once it is implemented. Using solar power designed for homes can generate hot water. When solar power is used in homes then not only are electricity bills reduced but the value of the home is also increased when the owner of the house tries to sell it.

Solar panels for the home are the most basic technology made to utilize solar power. The electricity is generated as these panels utilize photons. Solar panels are also called photovoltaic (PV) panels and these are rigid standing sheets, which utilize the solar energy. In these photovoltaic cells there are a presence of a very thin film of silver. You can set solar panels on roofs as well. Depending on your roof type, you can also get peel and stick laminates.

Modified grid systems can also be used to convert the sun’s energy into electrical energy. This type of system is similar to the grid system used in the home but the only difference is that it can harness solar energy also. Modified grid systems also contain a meter, which indicates how much solar power is being utilized by the home as compared to normal electricity.
